Going Deeper… (Psalm 84)

Here are some questions based on last Sunday’s sermon text (Psalm 84), in case they’re helpful to you for personal growth or group discussion…

  • [1-2] God’s dwelling place on earth (the church) is lovely because he dwells there. Why would people say that the church is not lovely? How would you respond in light of this passage or others from Scripture? How does God dwelling in the church, in our relationships to one another in Christ, make the church lovely? Do you take the fellowship of the church for granted? Do you have a strong desire to be with God among his people? Why or why not?
  • [3-4] Like sparrows and swallows are mundane, ordinary creatures, our participation in the church can often seem too mundane and ordinary to get excited about. How does God’s presence among us glorify the mundane? (Specific examples are good.)
  • [5-7] Can you imagine the anticipation of being with God among his people refreshing you during the hard, dry moments of life? How do you look to encourage others with the same refreshment?
  • [8-9] Do you have confidence that God hears your prayers because he looks on the face of his anointed (Christ)? What does that look like in your daily life? What does it look like for our life together as the church?
  • [10-12] Read Hebrews 11:23-28. What did Moses believe was better than “dwelling in the tents of wickedness”? What was the “reward” to which he was looking? Does Psalm 84 express the true beliefs of your heart? If you struggle to believe or feel these things, what do you think that says about your relationship with God?
