Going Deeper… (Psalm 19)

Here are some questions based on last Sunday’s sermon text (Psalm 19), in case they’re helpful to you for personal growth or group discussion…

  • [1-6] (Read Genesis 1:6-8, 14-19.) What do the heavens and the sun declare about the God who made them? What does that matter to you?
  • (Read Romans 1:18-23.) Why do we stop our ears to what creation says about its Creator? What is the result of having a response like this to God’s self-revelation?
  • [7-11] (Read Exodus 20:1-17; Matthew 22:34-40; Romans 13:8-10.) How does God make himself known to us by his law? What does his law say about him? What should your response to God’s law be? Why should you respond this way? How do you respond to God’s law, and why?
  • [12] (Read Jeremiah 17:9-10; Romans 3:23-24.) Even though we cannot know all our errors or hidden faults (which we have hidden from ourselves!), God does. And he instructs us to pray for forgiveness, because he forgives, even though he knows the worst about us better than we ever could. How does it feel, to be known by the Holy One better than you know yourself, and yet to be forgiven? What goal is accomplished when God forgives you? Why do you need to be reminded constantly of God’s forgiveness in Christ? Why does God want you to be assured of your forgiveness?
  • [13-14] Following forgiveness, real change becomes possible in a new relationship with our Savior God. Do you pray for God to free you from the power of sin? Why do you want to stop sinning? Why should you want to stop sinning? What do you think it will be like when you’re in God’s presence and he has changed you once and for all, never to sin again?
