Going Deeper… (Psalm 16)

Here are some questions based on last Sunday’s sermon text (Psalm 16), in case they’re helpful to you for personal growth or group discussion…

  • [1-2] Would you say that you “have no good apart from” the Lord? Do you always live like that’s true? What “good” do we seek apart from God? If it’s sought apart from God, can it really be good?
  • [3] If you go to church regularly, why? Is it because you are you thrilled to be with God’s people, or…? How is one’s delight in the saints not competitive with one’s delight in God? Do you resonate with this verse at all?
  • [4] Why are “multiplying sorrows” the result of “running after another god”? Do you recognize when you’re chasing down false gods? What does that look like for you? Have you reaped multiplying sorrows? If that’s the reward for idolatry, why do you still do it?
  • [5-6] God himself is the Psalmist’s “inheritance.” What does that mean? Can you think of other passages in the Bible that talk about an “inheritance”? How do you feel when you consider God to be your inheritance?
  • [9-11] (Read Acts 2:22-33; 13:32-38.) What does it mean that Psalm 16 is fulfilled in Jesus? Can you believe that, because it was fulfilled in him, the promise of resurrection, fullness of joy, and pleasures forevermore are yours? How would meditating on this Gospel truth this week affect your life?
