Going Deeper… (Psalm 122)

Here are some questions based on last Sunday’s sermon text (Psalm 122), in case they’re helpful to you for personal growth or group discussion…

  • [1-4] Read Deuteronomy 16:1-17. Eventually God would decree that Jerusalem was the place for the tribes to go up for their annual festivals at his tabernacle, and then his temple. Now where do we go for worship? Why? Why do we no longer go to the temple in Jerusalem?
  • Are you excited at the thought of going to church? Why do you go to church?
  • Assuming that the thought of going to church is sometimes less pleasant… Why do you not want to go to church? Do you feel like this should be a perpetual obstacle for you? Do you think there might be some solution to this in the Gospel? Have you prayed about it, or talked to others about it?
  • [5] When the Davidic king rules from his throne, he settles disputes, resolves conflict, makes peace by his wise and just judgments. King Jesus is the one who makes peace between God and his people, who reconciles enemies in his church. Where do you his ministry of reconciliation happening in the Gospels? In the rest of the New Testament? Do you entrust your judgment to him for your reconciliation to God and others in the church?
  • [6-9] How has King Jesus prayed for the peace of his people? How has he pursued it? How has he invited you to pray for and pursue it in the same way? What might that look like when you find yourself in conflict with others in the church? When you see others in conflict with each other?
