Going Deeper… (Matthew 22:1-14)

Here are some questions based on last Sunday’s sermon text (Matthew 22:1-14), in case they’re helpful to you for personal growth or group discussion…

  • [1-2] When you think about the kingdom of heaven, the reality where God is king, do you imagine it “compared to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son”? How do you imagine the kingdom of heaven? Why do you imagine it the way you do? Why should you imagine it the way Jesus talks about it?
  • What does it say about God, and particularly about the relationship between the Father and the Son, that Jesus would describe the kingdom in terms of “a king who gave a wedding feast for his son”?
  • [3-10] Jesus is speaking not just about how the kingdom is like a royal wedding feast (a really great party!), but also about how the kingdom “may be compared” to what the king does about the guests. He wants guests. Even though the original guests so rudely declined multiple invitations to the celebration and kindled his wrath, he still wants company for the celebration. What does this say about God? Do you think it says anything about his desire for relationship with you? If so, what?
  • [11-14] There is only one way to properly enter God’s kingdom, and that is to be clothed in Christ’s righteousness through trust in him. Have you responded to the Gospel invitation to enter God’s kingdom through faith in Jesus Christ? Why or why not?
