Going Deeper… (John 17:20-26)

Here are some questions based on last Sunday’s sermon text (John 17:20-26), in case they’re helpful to you for personal growth or group discussion…

  • [20] Can you believe that Jesus prays for you? Why or why not? What significance does that have?
  • [21-23] Jesus wants us to be one (unified) “just as” or “in the same way” he is one (unified) with the Father—that is, through mutual indwelling (“you in me… I in you… they in us… I in them… you in me…”). Do you want this? Why does Jesus want this? Do you want what he wants? How does this unity come about? Do you have it? Can you do anything to establish your unity with God and, thereby, with his people?
  • [22] God glorifies you by glorifying Jesus, your high priest, who then shares this glorification through the gift of the Holy Spirit (see Ezekiel 43:5; Romans 8:30). How does this fit with verses like Psalm 115:1 or Isaiah 42:8?
  • [25-26] “The world does not know you…” Do you believe that this is the world’s main problem? That this is the real problem behind all our visible problems? Does this seem to you like an accurate, relevant diagnosis of your problems? Considering this passage, what is to be done about this problem?
  • What might the answer to Jesus’ prayer look like in our congregation? If the Good News in Christ is that God glorifies us through his Holy Spirit, that God the Father treats us the same way he treats God the Son, then what might this mean for our actual relationships and daily life together?
