Here are some questions based on last Sunday’s sermon text (Matthew 5:5), in case they’re helpful to you for personal growth or group discussion…
- Jesus himself is “gentle,” a word also translated “meek” (Matthew 11:29). Since Jesus is God in the flesh, this means that God is meek. (It’s entirely in character for God to live as Jesus lives.) Why is it hard to believe that God is meek? Do you believe it? Is Jesus’ meekness, his gentleness, attractive to you? Have you experienced him as gentle?
- If you asked someone whether they considered meekness to be a character trait that would lend itself to taking over the world, they’d probably laugh. It is often considered an insult to call someone meek. Why do people not want to be known as meek? What do you think about Jesus saying, “Blessed are the meek…”? Would you like to be happy with God’s own happiness (“blessed”) by being meek? Would you like more opportunities to know Jesus and to relate to him in meekness? In what ways are you tempted to assert yourself, overpower others, and establish your own kingdom in this world?
- The Bible envisions the meek inheriting the earth and enjoying abundant peace (Psalm 37:11). Jesus, the Blessed Meek One, has already been given all authority in heaven and on earth, and he graciously shares his inheritance with his people. In the New Heavens and New Earth Jesus will fully establish shalom, abundant peace, true justice, and perfect relational harmony. And his people will rule at his side. Why would it be good for the meek to inherit the earth? Is this something you look forward to? Does it seem comforting to hear that the proud and mighty will come to nothing, while the meek will inherit the earth (Psalm 37)?
- FOR THE CHILDREN: Is it easy for you to think of Jesus as being gentle, meek? Can you think of some examples of Jesus being gentle with other people? Do you enjoy being gentle with others, or do you like to be bossy and pushy? Does being bossy and pushy ever help your relationships?
