Here are some questions based on last Sunday’s sermon text (Matthew 13:31-33), in case they’re helpful to you for personal growth or group discussion…
- Matthew 13:31-33 is paralleled in Luke 13:18-21. Jesus’ kingdom is in many ways inexplicable and imperceptible to us, and yet it is unstoppable and working just how it’s meant to work. We are prone to misinterpret and misjudge the activity and effectiveness of his kingdom, prone to misunderstand what it means even to participate in his kingdom. What potential misunderstandings might Jesus be addressing in these passages, according to the context? In what ways are you tempted to make wrong assessments of his kingdom based on your perception of the world or your circumstances? What effects can these wrong assessments have on your outlook on life, your prayers, or your engagement with the world? (Be specific.)
- Why do we so often come to the wrong conclusions about Jesus’ kingdom? (Think in terms of your relationship with Jesus.) Do you think you have the right or ability to understand everything about how Jesus is working in the world? Why or why not?
- How can it be encouraging to remember that Jesus’ kingdom is certainly working—just in ways that are often inexplicable or imperceptible to us? Can you think of any other Scriptures where we are given similar assurances about his kingdom advancing? What effects can this remembrance have on your outlook on life, your prayers, or your engagement with the world? (Again, be specific.)
