Here are some questions based on last Sunday’s sermon text (John 19:28-37), in case they’re helpful to you for personal growth or group discussion…
- [28, 36-37] Why do you think John is so concerned to show the Scriptures being “fulfilled” in Jesus? What does that mean? What’s the significance of it?
- [28-29] When Jesus said, “I thirst,” he was talking about drinking the cup of God’s wrath against sin, the cup the Father gave him to drink (John 18:11) in our place, the innocent one for the guilty ones. Why would he thirst to drink this cup? What does this reveal about God’s love?
- [30] Jesus said, “It is finished.” What is finished? What was the nature of his work, and why did it need to be done? Do you believe him that it is finished, or are there ways in which you feel you must finish his work?
- [35] Do you believe John’s testimony about the death of Jesus? Do you see it as a gift, or as something for which you must eventually pay? What difference does it make in your life? in the church? in the world?
