Here are some questions based on last Sunday’s sermon text (Revelation 22:6-21), in case they’re helpful to you for personal growth or group discussion…
- [6, 8, 16] God, Jesus, the messenger angel, and John all bear witness to the truth of the prophesies recorded in the Book of Revelation. Do you consider this Book to be trustworthy and true? Do you consider the Gospel of Jesus Christ to be trustworthy and true? Do you consider all the words of Scriptures to be trustworthy and true? Why or why not? Why is it important for the Christian actually to believe that the words of God are trustworthy and true?
- [7] To “keep the words of the prophecy of this book” means to respond to the revelation of Jesus in the ways Jesus wants us to respond. Primarily this means to endure in faithfulness to Christ, even when things are very difficult for believers in this life. And he pronounces a blessing on those who do this. He is not referring to the “blessing” of an easy, comfortable life. So, to what blessing(s) is he referring? (There are several promised blessings throughout the book.) Are you interested in these kinds of blessings from God? Are you so interested in these blessings that you will endure in faithfulness to Christ, even though it’s hard?
- [7, 12, 20] The return of Jesus to judge the world in righteousness and to make all things new is imminent—it is inevitable, and it could happen at any moment. Does this strike you as Good News? If you were to mention it to non-Christian friends, would it communicate Good News to them? In your mind, what are the ideal circumstances in which you would be when Christ returns? What would you be doing? What do you imagine would happen if Jesus “caught you off guard,” in the middle of committing some grievous sin? Do you believe he will still be merciful to you, even then?
- [17] The Spirit and the Bride (church) say to the nations, “Come,” come and join us in the church as Christ’s new community. And those who hear, those who respond and join the church through faith in Christ, are to join the chorus in inviting yet others to come to the Lord. This is participation in the mission for which Jesus himself was sent into the world. This is the fulfillment of the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20). This is disciples making disciples who make disciples. Have you responded to this call to worship and call to mission? Are you a disciple (student, apprentice) of Jesus? Have you made other disciples? Have you taught them to make yet more disciples? How do you do this? What are your main resources for doing this?
