Here are some questions based on last Sunday’s sermon text (John 20:19-23), in case they’re helpful to you for personal growth or group discussion…
- [19] Why were the disciples afraid of the Jews? Generally speaking, “the fear of man” can paralyze people. Why do you fear others, and how does it affect how you live? Why should we not fear others?
- How does it affect you to know that nothing can prevent the risen Lord Jesus from standing with his people?
- [20-21] Jesus gives us peace—relational reconciliation—with God (Romans 5:1). What kind of peace are you looking for? Are you content with the peace that Jesus gives? Do you actually believe he has given it to you, or do you feel you must still somehow attain it?
- We can carry Jesus’ peace out with us into a hostile world, just as he did, for love’s sake. Are you energized by Jesus’ peace to bring it to others? What would hinder you, personally, from participating in Jesus’ mission? Can you see how Jesus overcomes those obstacles?
- [22-23] Jesus is the one with authority to give the Holy Spirit to his people. His gift enlists and authorizes us for his vicarious ministry of forgiveness. What significance does this have for you? For your prayers? Your relationships? Your evangelism?
