Here are some questions based on last Sunday’s sermon text (John 17:6-19), in case they’re helpful to you for personal growth or group discussion…
- Why do you think this is called the “High Priestly Prayer”? What does it mean that Jesus is our Great High Priest (Hebrews 4:14)?
- Do you see any connections between this prayer and Solomon’s prayer at the dedication of the Jerusalem temple (1 Kings 8)? Between these and the Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6; Luke 11)?
- [6, 11, 12] Jesus mentions God’s “name” several times in this prayer. What is God’s name? What is the significance of God’s name? Does God’s name mark you in some way? How? To what end?
- [12-15] How can we be “kept from the evil one” while still enduring the hostility of this world? Why wouldn’t Jesus ask that we be spared from all such hostility?
- [16-19] Jesus graciously draws a lot of parallels between himself and us. In v. 19, when he says he “consecrates” himself so that we also may be “sanctified” (“consecrated,” the same word he just used of himself), what is he talking about? What is his consecration, and what, therefore, is ours? How can this consecration be seen in your daily life?
