• [19] Jesus told his disciples about Judas’ betrayal before it took place. This is remarkable for many reasons. What does this say about Jesus? Why did he do it?

• [21] “Jesus was troubled in spirit” when he spoke of Judas’ betrayal. What does this say about Jesus?

• [22] This was difficult news for the disciples. Judas’ betrayal of Jesus was unique in that he betrayed the Son of God to his death. But betrayal is (lamentably) a regular feature of life in this world. Any sin is a betrayal of our relationship with God, and Christians are quite capable of betraying and being betrayed by one another. How do you feel about this? Are you shocked or scandalized by betrayal when you face it?

• [26] Jesus’ attitude and actions toward his betrayer are loving to the end, which means he made himself vulnerable to death on the cross. Are you willing to risk the pain of betrayal by loving and becoming vulnerable like Jesus did? Why or why not? Why is this difficult for us? Can you think of any specific examples where this might be applicable in your life and relationships right now?
