Going Deeper… (Psalm 51:10-19)

Here are some questions based on last Sunday’s sermon text (Psalm 51), in case they’re helpful to you for personal growth or group discussion…

  • [10] “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come” (2 Corinthians 5:17). “God became man to turn creatures into sons: not simply to produce better men of the old kind but to produce a new kind of man” (C. S. Lewis, Mere Christianity). (Read also Genesis 1:1-2; John 3:5-8.) How does God make us a new creation and give us a new, clean heart? What is the main point of this for your life?
  • [11-12] What is the greatest longing of those who know their sins (v. 3) and who know that God has forgiven them (vv. 1-2, 7, 9)? Is this your greatest longing? Have you seen God answer this prayer in your life?
  • [13-17] Why would you praise the Lord? What would that look like, according to this Psalm? Has God changed you to make this more a reality in your life?
  • [18-19] These verses mark an expansion from a personal/individual prayer to a prayer for the good of all God’s people. Do you care how it goes for the church? Does knowing God and the joy of your salvation change the way you pray for others in the church? What are the most important things you pray for them?
