Going Deeper… (Psalm 47)

Here are some questions based on last Sunday’s sermon text (Psalm 47), in case they’re helpful to you for personal growth or group discussion…

  • [1] How do you personally feel about being expressive in worship? Do you think “all peoples” means that every single person everywhere ought to clap and sing praises to God? Why or why not?
  • [2] Why does this Psalm say are we supposed to clap and sing with joy? Does this mean there is only one good reason to clap and sing with joy?
  • [3-4] God being King of all the earth means that he can and does exalt his chosen people over all peoples, because he loves us. Why does he love us? (See Deuteronomy 7:6-8.) What did that exaltation look like for Israel before Jesus came? What does this exaltation look like for the church today? What will it look like when Jesus returns?
  • [5-8] When this Psalm was written it would have been a remembrance of something like 2 Samuel 6, when David and the people celebrated the Ark being brought up to Jerusalem. Christians now remember the Ascension of the God-man Jesus Christ to the throne of heaven. What kind of responses do you personally have to the biblical call to sing praises to this King? Do you fully understand his Kingship, his reign? Do you get your ideas about his Kingship from the Scriptures, or from your circumstances?
  • [9] The God-man being King of all the earth means that he can and does gather some from every nation, tribe, language, and people to be included among his own chosen people. How does he gather all the peoples? Where do you and people you know fit into this picture? What does it say about God, that he is this kind of King of all the earth?
